"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Lamentable Weekend Gross — what happened?" (Via io9)

Sorry for the rant, but I can’t believe people are shocked this bombed. This has become routine: a movie from a cult source that strongly appeals to the loudest voices on the Internet always* forsakes the mass market. The internet gets excited, assumes everyone is as excited as their network. Then the movie flops.

Examples: Kick Ass, Firefly, & Snakes on a Plane

Upcoming examples: Green Lantern**, Green Hornet**, Avengers.

* This doesn’t apply to films with ‘Ironman’ in the title.

** Honestly, who thought anyone would care about either of these? My favorite bit was when reports leaked out that the studio wasn’t happy with early cuts of The Green Hornet because it was too quirky. Really? You hire Michel Gondry to direct Seth Rogan in a campy superhero role and you’re surprised when it’s quirky???

I bet some executive was shown a chart with the average gross for comic based movies in the last 5 years. Let this be a lesson for you all: behind every trend chart lurks a Dark Knight and several Kick Asses.

And yes, no one really cared about Ironman before RDJ took on the role, but that franchise had three things going for it that Green Lantern lacks: it was about a rich playboy, was gadget centric, and starred RDJ as an asshole. It’s essentially a super-powered James Bond film that swaps British subtlety for American brashness. Green Lantern has a ring.
