Facts about Dueling
Speaking of dueling, the Wikipedia page is fascinating:
- “In 1808, two Frenchmen are said to have fought in balloons over Paris, each attempting to shoot and puncture the other’s balloon; one duelist is said to have been shot down and killed with his second.”
- Many duels were prevented because the parties couldn’t agree on rules. “In the instance of Dr. Richard Brocklesby, the number of paces could not be agreed upon; and in the affair between Mark Akenside and Ballow, one had determined never to fight in the morning, and there other that he would never fight in the afternoon.”
- “Between 1798 and the Civil War, the US Navy lost two-thirds as many officers to dueling as it did in combat at sea.”
