I'm Drew Breunig and I obsess about technology, media, language, and culture. I live in New York, studied anthropology, and work in advertising technology.

These are reactions to things I feel are important.

Getting out into the real world is an important thing to do once in awhile. Talking tech over microbrews with other startup founders doesn’t count. Most of the products and companies coming out of the Bay these days are… a little too optimistic.

Kelly Sutton, on Choosing New York over San Francisco

The whole East Coast v. West Coast fight finally caught up to startup nerds. There was a big back and forth the past few days, claiming no city can compete with the technology environment of the Bay Area. However, Sutton correctly notes it’s not just about technology.

Having a richer technology environment isn’t necessarily an advantage. The Bay Area breeds a set of unrealistic assumptions about the technical prowess of your audience. We all don’t have smartphones and spend more time with computers than people.
