At the time, would you agree that it might have been the right call? It does seem logical, even though it did fail.

I agree: we can’t judge. No one could suggest that Jindal had anything but the best intentions. I was more blown away by the poetic aspect of the situation. Even when we try, our attempts to affect the Earth always disrupt something. Our limited understanding that allows us to perceive that something is wrong cannot begin to grasp the complex contexts of each situation.

The NYTimes article reminded me of the most recent episode of Radiolab, which chronicled efforts to save an endangered warbler. I strongly suggest everyone listen to the whole story. (Or really, the entire series of Radiolab…)
