Creating a Registry of "Art" Among "Vandalism"
Following the white-washing (heh) of Banksy’s pink gorilla in Bristol, the city is considering a plan to protect “public artwork” in the city:
The proposed register would mean planning permission would be required to alter street artworks.
Mr Comer has asked Bristol’s Neighbourhood Partnerships to put together a list of all the known valuable public artworks around the city.
He added: “The idea of the register is that people could consult it before they did work on a building, and have a look and see if it was of any value before they get the emulsion out.”
No word whether vandalism arrests will continue. Will they distribute licenses to “artists” to present to questioning cops? If I’m arrested for tagging a wall, can I submit a defense to the court that I’m an artist? What expert do I call: an art critic or appraiser?
This whole thing is so weird. (Via the BBC)
