Give Me Something To Read: Reading List: The Phone-Hacking Scandal

givemesomethingtoread:

All hell broke loose in the British press last week when Rupert Murdoch revealed he’d be shutting down the News of the World in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal. Since then, an avalanche of inquiries, conjecture, and gleeful ribbing. Even as the last ever edition of the News of the World — an inappropriately rose-tinted edition — sells record copies, the true reach of the scandal is still unknown, and the fate of the now-unemployed News of the World staff is as much in the balance as that of Rebekah Brooks and Rupert Murdoch. This story will go down as one of the decade’s biggest, and here I’ve collected some of the more unmissable and informative pieces on the scandal from the past week or so.

Give Me Something to Read compiles a fantastic collection of the must-read pieces concerning the News Corp. scandal.

While this story’s turn is plainly horrible, I’m glad it evolved into such gripping reading as the themes it contains (Murdoch’s influence in British politics, the relationship between Democracy and journalism/media, personal information accessibility, etc) are staggeringly important to everyone.

If you haven’t been following this story due to its socio-political importance, read it for its pulp storyline. It has everything: hacked phones of murder and 9/11 victims, media mogul political influence, family business drama, and my favorite bit: the one person Murdoch can’t hang out to dry is the best tabloid editor in the world, Rebekah Brooks. You can bet Brooks has J. Edgar Hoover-level dirt on every player involved.

Read it all, if only to know what everyone will be talking about tomorrow. This one’s not done.
