After Chopin: Cyborg Mazurkas.

While at UCSC, I heard David Cope speak several times. Each was captivating, but none really could compare to the music his software, Emmy, produced. Here is a Mazurka from After Chopin, from his series of reproductions by classical masters via software.

Cope’s work is creepy. This file has been bouncing around in my iTunes and often gets played next to Chopin’s actual Mazurkas, and I almost never notice until I go to note how good this piece is… and realize it’s procedural.

There’s a fantastic piece on Cope and his work up here. There are a few samples of his Emmy 2.0, aka “Emily Howell”: software that produces original work. And it’s stunning (scary).
