British Home Secretary Alan Johnson holds two prototype pint glasses designed not to break up into dangerous shards on impact, in London, Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010. The British government wants pubs to try out shatterproof pint glasses as a way to cut back on beer-related violence. (AP Photo/PA, Stefan Rousseau)
Here’s a (sad) case study for what not to do: rather than address the underlying problem (an increasing culture of violence), correct a outlying variable.
Do these people really believe that a shatter-proof glass is going to decrease their £2 billion+ problem? If I’m drunk and I’m upset enough to slash someone in the face with a shard I requisitioned from my pint glass, I sure as hell am going to turn to a chair, knife, or pool cue when the glass doesn’t cooperate. The problem here is rooted in culture, not in an easily breakable pint glass.
So visit old Britain today, before your pub visit takes place in a padded room filled with pre-cut food and sippy-cups of beer!

These would have ruined Trainspotting. This would have made stealing them SO much less worrisome.
