Lust for Life - Girls
Girls is one of those bands I wasn’t anxious to pick up. The lo-fi, surf rock revival always seems to be just around the corner, it just moves from city to city. San Diego is perpetually in this state, what with Swami Records putting out a new entry every month. Dan Sartain is probably my favorite of the bunch. When the Brooklyn kids picked it up, bands like Wavvves took it to it’s thematic limit. They were happy to mock what they practiced.
So then there’s Girls, a band spawned only a from my neighborhood. I was afraid to give it a chance because San Francisco embraces new styles like Brooklyn, as amateurs watching themselves. Working towards talent is often forsaken for dabbling.
How wrong I was: this song is solid. It’s loose but focused, which is rare for this San Francisco brand of quirk. The melody is classic. I can’t seem to shake it.
