If Sister Act gives religion a mild tweak, The Book of Mormon pulls every one of its limbs out of their sockets. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone with Avenue Q’s Robert Lopez, the musical tells the story of a pair of teenage missionaries who get sent to Uganda, where can-do Mormon pep meets its match in disease, starvation, and warlords who shoot people in the face. It is, hands down, the filthiest, most offensive, and—surprise—sweetest thing you’ll see on Broadway this year, and quite possibly the funniest musical ever.
