SGI just released its first product since declaring bankruptcy. The Octane III isn’t groundbreaking, but the niche it fills is an interesting one. For $7-10k, garage physicists, engineers, and animators can get a multicore, rackmounted system. That’s not a bad deal and it highlights a rather interesting direction SGI could go.
I’m pulling for SGI to emulate Netscape/Firefox: go open-source, release their patents and resurface as a nonprofit.
