I'm Drew Breunig and I obsess about technology, media, language, and culture. I live in New York, studied anthropology, and work at PlaceIQ.

By Sunday morning, four National Football League teams were linked to a “bounty” scandal that came to light in Friday’s NFL announcement that New Orleans Saints defensive players were paid for “big hits” that took opponents out of play. “Knockouts” were worth $1,500 and “cart-offs” $1,000, with payments doubled or tripled for the NFL playoffs. Over the weekend, reports of bounty programs at the Washington Redskins, Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans emerged in The Washington Post, the Buffalo News and The New York Times.

CSMonitor reports on NFL teams paying bounties for concussions or worse. Absolutely disgusting.

This is why I can’t stand football. Forget the injury, healthcare, and pension problems for retired and disabled players. Forget the university studies sponsored by the NFL investigating safer helmets and concussion risks. Everything wrong can be traced to a culture which celebrates violence.

Fixing helmets won’t help if the culture doesn’t change.
