Ultrabooks We’ll Meet at CES
Since last year’s Tabletcetera failed to produce a challenger to the iPad, PC makers are shifting their sputtering-flashlight-like focus up Apple’s product line towards the red hot MacBook Air.
According to TechCrunch, manufacturers will field 30-50 Ultrabooks at this year’s CES 2012. Given the learning curve of today’s PC industry, I fully expect ASUS, Acer, and their ilk to employ precisely the same strategy they used to address the iPad: features, features, features.
Each 2012 Ultrabook will sport a major marquee feature that is absent from the Air. Over the last few months, these features have been carefully extracted from literally tens of focus group participants, whom uncomfortably answered questions from clipboard-toting moderators in pursuit of a modest cash windfall. The $100 paid to each participants has been billed to the R&D budget.
So how will CES entrants differ from the MacBook Air? Here are some probable models:
- Swiviling Touchscreen Ultrabook
- BluRay Ultrabook
- Solar Charging Ultrabook
- Pretty Colored Ultrabook
- Glasses-less 3D Ultrabook
- Detatchable Tablet Ultrabook
- Double-screen Ultrabook
- Fiberglass/Titanium/Kevlar Ultrabook
- Co-Branded Ultrabook
That last one will have a partnership with Dreamworks, ship with digital copies of all their movies, be green, and have Shrek antennae things atop the monitor.
Each Ultrabook will trade boring line items like battery life, durability, and usability for their respective marquee feature. Most will be unveiled with techno and flashing lights. Some will make it into Popular Sciences’ “What’s Hot” section. All will be evaluated by Consumer Reports.
None will make it to next year’s CES.
