This ugly box represents my excitement for Apple and Intel’s Thunderbolt port.

Because Thunderbolt essentially combines the DisplayPort and PCIe protocols in a serial stream, it’s possible to create this PCIe breakout box. Open it up, plug in a RAID controller, audio card, video capture card, graphics card, or an ultra-fast SSD card, then connect the box to your MacBook as you please.

Hopefully, OEMs take the next step and create a “DeskDock”: a box that will grant your laptop the flexibility and powerful capabilities of a desktop. It would look like a normal desktop case, with space needed for spare harddrives, PCIe cards and such. The only thing it would be missing is a CPU, which your laptop would kindly provide anytime you weren’t mobile.
